This afternoon at 4:45 PM, where I saw my second AMERICAN ROBIN of the spring, there were at least 10 males foraging on a frozen lawn. Also, the first multiple sightings this spring. When they are on frozen grass, I think they are usually after cranefly larvae, etc., that have been forced up out of the soil by frost over winter. I did, however, see a freshly-drowned nightcrawler on the bottom of a foot-deep "puddle" at wood's edge last evening (there was about an inch of ice over top even at noon today).
