Bald Eagle

Date: 03/24/2002

Number: 1

Observed huge brown bird about 50' above the east pasture. Wingstrokes were very exaggerated, not the fixed stiff wings of our usual vultures. Too big to be our resident gyrfalcons Mr.& Mrs. Harrier, who keep the bird feeder intimates diving. Checking the neck, thinking sandhill crane; I discovered the bird was headless against the light sky! A dark cloud clarified the white head of an eagle! We've had a few sightings along the Grand River in past years, but this bird was northbound a mile away from the river. It joined another eagle to play on the wind currents rising from the back gulley. I watched them glide & "play" for 30 minutes before they went on north.
