Tulips EMERGED

Date: 03/22/2002

Number: 1

My second graders were a little concerned about their tulips, as New Hampshire experienced a cold spell and several inches of snow. We went to check on them 3/22/02 and it was one of the coldest days of the year. Our tulips were covered in about 17 centimeters of snow; however in the far right hand corner was a tulip sprout. It was about 4 centimeters and we could already see the brillant red color glowing. My students were very concerned about what effect the cold and snow would have on the growth of their tulips. They wanted to specifically know if the cold spell would cause mutations to the flower's normal development.
