Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/23/2002

Number: 1

I spotted the first Monarchs, about ten, this morning as soon as the sun had dried the dew. They were definitely trying to move north. I will go out again later today and see if the population has gone up. I will also check the milkweed areas.

I have been going out daily since your message on the 18th of March. The weather has not been conducive to anything trying to migrate to the north, cold, sometimes damp, and often very windy with winds in excess of 25 mph often and long. There also have been very few plants in bloom.

Spring is definitely on the upswing here now. The Blue Bonnets and Sweet Williams are beginning to put out significant blooms; I have not done a search for milkweed plants yet in the area most heavily populated with them.
