Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/28/2002

Number: 1

The monarchs have made it to southwest Arkansas. We counted 9 in about fifteen minutes flying along a small county road. There are not many flowers for them to nectar on, but the crimson clover is just beginning to bloom so maybe we will see a lot more soon.

We have been looking for the native milkweed that grows around here since
the weather has started warming up, but we haven't seen any yet. We
planted some A. curassavica in our Outdoor Classroom today, but we also
have several varieties of A. tuberosa out there as well - none of it has
emerged yet. There is a blackland prairie about thirty miles northeast
of us that has a lot of A. virdis (a green flowering milkweed) - we will be
going there soon to see if it has emerged. I will let you know as soon as
we see the first leaves of some of our native milkweed.
