Along the rail trail near Jerseyville, many birds were seen in shrubs along the trail and in pine and mixed hardwood forest edges. One bluejay, many male cardinals (exhibiting territorial chasing behaviour - I saw around 10 within a short walking stretch), sparrows, many red-winged blackbirds, robins, a solitary hairy woodpecker, one kildeer in a cornfield. Many sparrows were near the fallen corn cobs from last fall's harvest. Went looking for barn swallows but none seen yet. Many red-tailed hawks perching by trees along Highway 403.
