First loon overhead this morning at 7 am. (First confirmed that is. I'm pretty sure I saw one last week too, about April 3rd or 4th.) Ice has still not gone out of local lakes, but there are a few open areas large enough for a loon to land and taek off again.
They're so heavy in flight, with such rapid wing beats. They appear to be desperately beating their wings to keep from falling out of the sky.
