A single tulip had poked through the snow this afternoon, so today's the day I'll consider Journey North's official garden to have emerged. This is the 7th year the garden has been planted in exactly the same place. Below are past years' emergence dates to compare with this year's.
I pulled a chunk of ice off the rest of the garden and saw that several other shoots had indeed emerged---directly into that packed ice! I'm watching a 2nd garden this year that emerged March 30th, 10 days ago. This makes it clear to me that Official Journey North garden is greatly effected by its location on the south side of a frozen lake. North winds always cause huge snowdrifts to form there, and it's one of the very last places to lose snow in the spring.
