All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 04/12/2002

Number: 1

The sun is shining and there's a warm front passing through today. The honey bees are buzzing at my hives for the first time this spring, and the hornets are out as well. The frogs have started calling in the morning and again in the evening. I travelled up to Bancroft on Wednesday (45 km north) and was surprised to see that all the ponds, lakes, and streams are still ice covered from about 10km north of my place. We've got mallards and Canada geese nestbuilding on my ponds, and we had the canoe in the ponds on Monday this week, but one of the teachers who lives in Coe Hill just south west of Bancroft has just reported seeing and hearing her first robin of the spring. There's a significant difference in the birds being seen and heard in the two locations. Perhaps this week's warm weather will encouraged the song birds to continue their journey north! I pulled the taps from the maples Thursday April 11 because the sap has turned cloudy. The last of the syrup is being finished of
