Subject: [NEodes] Green Darners in Ontario

Today (April 16th) 5 Green Darners (Anax junius) were seen at two locations within Sandbanks Prov. Park on the north shore of Lake Ontario at 43 55'N. Today has been the warmest day of the year so far with south winds and temperatures of 22 C. One flooded grassy field had a single female and a pair in tandem ovipositing. A second pair in tandem were ovipositing in one of the flooded dune slacks (pannes).

This is the earliest by three weeks that I have seen Anax here though this is partially due to observer bias as I usually do not start looking for odes until May. I suspect in the past they may have been coming up earlier and ovipositing before I start looking as I have seen the next generation start coming out in early August (How long for Green Darners to hatch and
emerge?) but have not previously seen them
