Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/18/2002

Number: 1

I teach 5-year-olds in the Houston area and we have watched the monarch metamorphosis for a couple of years now. I have butterfly weed in my backyard and when I find eggs on them I take the bush into school and we watch the caterpillars complete their life cycle. A Dad constructed a large cage to place over the bush. When the caterpillar is ready it climbs to the top of the enclosure and forms its chrysalis. The students are fascinated by the process. We were lucky enough once to actually watch the complete formation of the chrysalis. We were hooked. Recently I brought in the article from the Houston Chronicle explaining the plight of the monarchs since the winter storm in Mexico wiped out so many of them. We are on a mission to save the monarch. I am reporting that we have several caterpillars on our bushes right now and they are doing well. We will release them as always once they have completed the metamorphosis and we are hoping to inrease the population once again.
