Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/20/2002

Number: 1

We celebrated "Return of the Monarchs" at Clinton Community Nature Center this morning with a brief informational talk in the Butterfly Garden at the Center. Several milkweed plants (A. viridis) had 2nd and 3rd instar larvae and we released two worn females that had been captured the day before as they were laying eggs. Many of the participants "adopted" one or more caged larvae that were reared from eggs collected during the first 2 weeks of April in our fields. We provided fresh milkweed in plastic bags which can be held in the refrigerator to help support the adoptees. Asclepias tuberosa and A. incarnata are both several inches tall now but no eggs or larvae have been found on these species.
