Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/22/2002

Number: 1

Yesterday (April 22, 2002) around 5 pm I checked a small stand of around 12 A. viridis plants at Clinton Community Nature Center and found the entire cluster had been defoliated and only a few stubs were left. At the tip on one stub were 4 large 4th instar monarch larvae. After moving these to other nearby plants I noticed several other large larvae crawling on the ground and several that had climbed other plants. The complete count included 14 large larvae that had survived to defoliate this small milkweed cluster. It is quite unusual to find large larvae in the fields in this area and to find so many in a small area is an exceptional event.
