Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/25/2002

Number: 1

Our fourth graders have been tracking migration from Mexico. Several students reported sighting a monarch butterfly on the playground on the afternoon of the 25th. We are keeping track of the migration on a big wall map outside of our classroom next to a large weather map on which we record daily weather conditions.

The students who spotted the Monarch all said
it looked pretty bright in coloring. We had discussed the importance of
looking for signs of "wear and tear" when we talked about identification.
All of the students, but one, said it was flying. One reported seeing it
land on the grass for a few seconds.
Weather conditions: @77 degrees, calm winds @12-16 mph) from the NW, partly
cloudy.

The milkweed patch we planted here at school is not up yet. We had
about 30 plants. I live a half mile from school and my milkweed just poked
it's head out @ April27.
