Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/01/2002

Number: 1

I hung my feeder last night at 8:00 pm and today, 5/1/02, at 7:38 am, I saw my first ruby throated hummingbird at my feeder. I decided to hang my feeder out, because when I checked your site, I saw that there were sightings close to my area. I didn't expect to see one for a few weeks. I will be hanging out additional feeders when I get home from work. Each year we have about three hummingbirds, one male, and two females that compete at our feeders. I love to watch the male perform the pendulum ritual to attract the female. Then a few minutes later the male will be chasing the female away from the feeder. What an interesting relationship. I also have goldfinches, blue birds, cardinals, blue jays, and red tailed hawks that visit my yard daily.
