Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/01/2002

Number: 1

On 4/26/02 I captured one 5th instar Monarch caterpillar, isolating it in a wire inclosure with a. curassavica, where it pupated overnight. It did not eat during that time.
On 4/27/02, I repeated this process with another 5th instar Monarch caterpillar.
Both of these chrysalis appear to be healthy at this time, and are hanging on a mounting board at the rear of my home, under cover, and protected.
On 4/28/02 and 4/29/02, I collected single, apparently healthy Monarch chrysalis in my yard, one on a chain-link fence, the other on a childs play-gym. They are now also on the mounting board.
Today, May 1, 2002, Monarch activity is relatively heavy in my yard, averaging 6 to 12 or more at any given time. Female ovipositing is observed from time to time, but 1st instars are not to be seen. In bloom: a. curassavica, blue & coral porterweed, yellow & white buddleia, pentas, verbena, cassia, lantana, firebush.
