Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/11/2002

Number: 1

Afternoon of 11 May 02 I watched three female Monarchs (my first of the season sighted at this location) patrol a common milkweed field at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens all laying eggs. Weather was clear, very light wind and in the high 70's. Two of the females were in excellent condition, I couldn't get close enough to the third to determine her condition. I checked most of the milkweed plants (approx. 100) and counted upwards of over eighty eggs, all on the common milkweed only. Not one of the swamp milkweed plants (in the field or in border gardens had a single egg. On two occasions I found multible eggs on one leaf or bud, on one plant I found six eggs all clustered around the top new leaves and buds. It was good hunting and great to see the Monarchs back.
