Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/23/2002

Number: 1

I have continued to monitor the Choctaw Trails site in southwest Jackson throughout May and can report my first sighting of a fresh monarch adult (other than those we released from captive rearings). This female was nectaring on Butterfly Weed; no eggs were found on this plant or on other nearby green milkweeds. The last sighting of adults at this site was on April 27 and involved worn females. Green Milkweed (A. viridis) is now in mature seedpod and these should be splitting to release seeds in a week or so; the Butterfly Weed has just come into flower.
