Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/24/2002

Number: 1

Have thought about that monarch and what generation it could be! Large numbers of very, very faded monarchs were observed thirty to forty miles north-northwest of Victoria in DeWitt County for about two weeks in April. Fifty to one hundred in two hours, flying low over pastures of A. asperula, sunning on the west side of Hackberry trees, with many eggs being deposited. If the monarch today was from one of those "old" monarchs, we would think it would now be a first generation northbound. Another scenario: a monarch of an egg deposited in mid-March by a monarch overwintering in Mexico (zero generation), that monarch (first generation northbound) depositing an egg south and west of Victoria, then the monarch we saw this afternoon would be a second generation northbound.
