Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/25/2002

Number: 1

The monarch was flying, messing around a viburnum I have in the yard. It was a beautiful, still day for Lone Tree, though somewhat overcast and coolish.

The milkweed is up to about 2 feet. Far, far from blooming. I have a particularly healthy crop of it this year, however. My prairie is also doing well, with the Penstemon just getting ready to break into bloom. For the Monarchs I grow lots of dill and parsley. Last year I had as many as 11 Monarch catepillars on one parsley plant, ranging from itty-bitty to big boy.

I was delighted to see a Monarch because of the massive kill in Mexico this winter. Not knowing much about their habits, I was worried that I wouldn't see any of them this year.
