Late yesterday afternoon (5/23/02), my first Monarchs for the year appeared in the yard over a one hour period. A very fresh female and a very worn female both oviposited on Common Milkweed and Butterfly Weed. While the second female was still cruising around in high lazy circles prior to leaving, a slightly worn, but very, very dark male showed up. It was rusty brown, darker than any Monarch I have ever seen. But it basked on several leaves in the late day sun, giving me plenty of time to confirm its identity. (Pfafftown is near Winston Salem and about 30 miles west of Greensboro.)
