Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/16/2002

Number: 1

The first monarchs have arrived here. Yesterday, June 16 , I saw two monarchs nectaring on the flowering trees , flowers amd shrubs, and then saw them lingering in the milkweed patch in my yard. The spring weather here has been dry and chilly but we received heavy rains last week. Everything is about a month behind in growth and the milkweed is about a foot high. One of the monarchs looked fresh and new but the other looked well travelled. Today, June 17, I saw two more in the afternoon in the milkweed. I am helping to set up a monarch display at the International Peace Garden which is a park located on the border and includes land from both countries.Since the gardeners there frown at the very mention of milkweed, I have potted three plants in large containers so they can display it.

Also I have promised to take the larvae so the complete cycle can be shown to park visitors. So the monarchs have arrived at the 49th parallel and we are hoping for lots of eggs and butterflies. Reported by Mike Quinn.
