Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/29/2002

Number: 1

I thought you might be interested in knowing that we saw a monarch on July 29th and another one on Aug 9th, at locations in Tallahassee about five miles apart. These were necturing monarchs, and the first left a number of eggs and caterpillars that we put into a protected environment. We now have 40 chrysalides and 16 fifth-stage instars.

I wouldn't classify these two monarchs as migrators, maybe better termed as just "wanderers". Nevertheless, this is a delayed repeat of last summer, when monarchs appeared on July 5th, and that led to our raising and tagging 15 monarchs in July, 209 in August, and 268 in September. Many of them didn't finally leave the area until it was time for them to migrate southward.

Again, all this probably has no direct relationship to fall migration--but it is interesting.
