Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are beginning to showup along the Texas mid coast. We saw two at school in Victoria on Monday at the Mexican Fire Bush (Hummingbird Bush). Saw the first in the backyard today here along the bay ... visiting various red salvias and then the feeder. They should stay in the area for a few weeks before they try to make the big jump from here across the Gulf to the Yucatan ... or southwest down the coast. We figure the big push should arrive in the area about September 15. Many other migrants, such as warblers, are beginning to show. Hawkwatchers are in their towers up and down the coast awaiting the hawks that will pass through to South Texas, Mexico, Central America and points southeast of there. Hundreds of thousands a day should be passing over Victoria in about a month.
