I am have been involved in JN from the onset! I collect monarch caterpillars for observation each year from our cottage in Saugatuck on Lake Michigan. This year I spent 2 hours and probably looked at over 500 milkweed plants and yielded only 2 eggs and one juvenile caterpillar!!! Usually it in NO problem for me to casually find a caterpillar or two...This took serious work! I agree that the count is WAY down...I also did not observe any monarchs heading south along the lakeshore. Usually by this time the migration has begun. hope this information is helpful.
