Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 08/19/2002

Number: 1

On Monday, August 19 and around 7:00 pm there were hundreds of monarch butterflies in flight just at tree top level following the Green Bay shore off of Lake Michigan.

The butterflies just kept comming from the north and went straight south in large groups. Closer to nightfall they dwindled until we could no longer see. The birds flew over head and often seemed to dive at them but did not eat them. I thought perhaps because they eat milkweed, they may be toxic. We alerted the campers near by and everyone was enjoying the show.
