This is a bit sad, but I just saw my first monarch of the year today. Despite frequent checks, I have not seen any eggs or caterpillars. I live on the South shore of Long Island, NY. By this time I would normally have spotted many. The population is definately down, but at least I was a little encouraged by seeing this one.
