Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/23/2002

Number: 1

I know this is a quiet time for Monarch watchers. I just wanted to let someone know what was happening here.
I have an explosion of Monarchs here on the north west side of Houston. Since the beginning of July I have been noticing caterpillars on my milkweed. I usually leave them on the plants outdoors until they are about to change. I then put them in an enclosure to feed them and wait until they change. Since July 7th I have released over 50 butterflies. I have 25 in chrysalis and 30 more ready to change. They are every where in my garden. I am wondering if any one else across the country is seeing this.
I have never had any thing like this during the summer months.
Is this happening to compensate for the die off last winter? I am concerned about the wide spread spraying in our area for mosquitoes. I have brought my enclosure indoors to reduce their exposure to the pesticides.
