Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/26/2002

Number: 1

I haven't seen any monarchs migrating yet, but I will pass on any reports I hear or read from others. The hawk watches have just begun, and they frequently list monarchs also.

The monarch numbers have been increasing in south-central Ontario, but it seems
very late and very slow. I don't agree with those who say numbers are normal. We
have had dry, very hot periods this summer, but no real drought, and the milkweed
has been very healthy every place I've been. On the entomology walk I was on last
Saturday, August 24 (actually to look for spiders) I saw 8 monarch caterpillars from 3/4" to
final instar, and one chrysalis. That was encouraging, but more than I've seen the whole rest of the summer.
