Today, August 28, is traditionally the day I see the most monarchs in the lane near our house. Each year they roost in the tall cottonwoods and even in the smaller box elder trees before starting migration. Last year the lane was full of monarchs. On a slow drive you would chase dozens down the lane.
Today I followed a large harvest combine down the lane. It brushed the branches of the trees and the monarchs were disturbed and flew around for a few minutes before relanding in the trees. I saw 5 monarchs. Quite a difference from last years 50-75.
