Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/31/2002

Number: 1

At 11:49, while driving the perimeter roads of Alcoa, we had a monarch fly in front of the van at about four feet. Hurried, dedicated flight flight from NNW to SSE, disappeared off to the SSE. Second day with light NNE winds, this was probably an oversummering coastal monarch relocating and not a southbound migrant ... migration is about six weeks away for us. The thirty
or more Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that were visiting this week are down to two today. Some may have chosen to make the leap from our backyard across the Gulf to the Yucatan while there was a little tailwind.
