Signs of Fall

Date: 08/31/2002

Number: 1

The number of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds has been on an increase this past week with large numbers stacking up along the coast by Wednesday. The thirty or so that were visiting our backyard on Wednesday and Thursday was down to two today. We are having the second day of light north-northeast winds and some may have decided this was the time to make the long leap from the mid coast across the Gulf to the Yucatan ... make use of a quartering tailwind to cut a few hours off the trip! About noon yesterday the number of hummers went to zero. In our yard, red and scarlet salvias and red pentas seemed to be first choice over the feeders with a sugar/water mixture. Hawk counts are increasing at the hawkwatch south of Victoria.
