Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/28/2002

Don't fret everyone. you are not seeing Monarchs yet because they are still caterpillars here in South easter Ontario, Canada. I am getting ready to go back to the classroom Tuesday, Spetember 3, so my children and I went into the back farmer's field to gather a caterpillar for my class. (We already had found three caterpillars for my three children earlier that week). To our delight, we found 14, that right, 14 monarch caterpillars, ranging in size from one centimetre to five centimetres (ready to go to crysallis)! In the last four year that I have been teaching the Monarch migration unit, the most caterpillars IN TOTAL we have ever found is 8. Last year we found only two. So, My terrarium is full right now, so our hunting as stopped. On Sunday September 1, we now have 8 crysallis (one i think is dead), and 10 caterpillars. I even have tags this year. How exciting!
