Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/08/2002

Number: 1

Bad news re: migration....I returned Sunday evening, Sept. 8
from my journey to Sault St Marie and I did not see any monarchs at all - the
temperature was 34C, sunny and blue skies.

It is 900 km from my home in Madoc to the Sault College campus in
Sault St Marie. It takes me about 12 hours to drive (because I stop
a lot along the way to "adventure" along the back roads looking for
signs of milkweed, etc).

At home, my second monarch will
be out this morning. I did see thousands and thousands of milkweed plants -
the swamp milkweed still has flowers in some areas, but the regular milkweed
was already in the pod stage. There are still many sulfur butterflies
nectaring along the back roads and fluttering around everywhere, but our
monarch buddies don't seem to be around. I will look up on Manitoulin Island
this weekend.
