Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/10/2002

Number: 1

The milkweed we planted in the gardens around the house has done well this summer, but we have not found any monarch eggs on the plants. The milkweed along the roads/highways in our immediate area has not been healthy this spring/summer. We are not certain if this is due to excessive rainfall and the standing water/high moisture levels in the ditches resulting in rot, or if the road shoulder/ditch cutting alone or combined with the spraying/fogging of mosquito breeding areas due to the West Nile virus concern in our community is taking a toll on the plants. Or it may be something totally unrelated to these observations.
