Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/11/2002

Number: 1

While driving south on Memorial Drive along the Lake Michigan shoreline from Two Rivers to Manitowoc at 9:00am today (The trip took 4 minutes, at the speed of 45 miles an hour, the tempurature was 71 degrees), I counted 320 monarchs flying over the highway. Some were circling in large groups and others were heading southwest. In many areas there were so many monarchs flying overhead it was difficult to count, particularly while driving! I deliberately took this route because of the cold front that passed through our area yesterday. On the return trip at around 11:30am, I counted 26 monarchs along the same route. In fact there was a ratio of 1 monarch to at least 8 dragonflies traveling in a south westerly direction. Suggestion for a challenge question: Do the dragonflies follow the monarchs?
