Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/13/2002

Number: 1

Wednesday, Altus and I saw two monarchs in just a few minutes on the eastern side of Victoria near the O'Connor School. Heading was generally from northeast to southwest, they were on a hurried, dedicated flight to the southwest. My 7th and 8th graders reported seeing seven monarchs this week, four were seen by parents and students over one of the practice fields yesterday between four and six. One student and his mother tried to chase down one of two monarchs they found earlier this week nectaring. It is too early to be seeing any of the monarchs being reported a thousand miles northeast of here so we are thinking they are monarchs from nearby relocating to the southwest ... premigration migration or monarchs just taking advantage of the northeast winds TS Fay brought to relocate? We thought the "urge" to migrate should begin a month later here at 29 degrees north.

We are bracing for the first cold front of the year
that is forecast to make it to the coast late Sunday
or early Monday.
