The maple tree outside my window is just starting to turn. A few times each hour, against a backdrop of still-summer green, an early falling leaf catches my eye. A monarch! I look up and out quickly, to focus more closely. But it falls to the ground, lifelessly, and carries my feelings with it--a brief wave of disappointment, the feeling of something lost and gone past, the end of nature's kindest season and the coming of winter.
