Today I saw a large group of Monarchs nectaring on patches of Showy Goldenrod (Solidago speciosa) in a small remnant prairie. The prairie is a flat area, about 1/2 an acre, with many blooming native prairie flowers, on top of a bluff, and surrounded by small trees, and then by cornfields and woods. I could count about 30 Monarchs at one time, but I suspect there were more that I didn't count because they were turned edgewise to me, or because they weren't moving. The peak of the migration has already passed here - I saw only a few Monarchs actively migrating, and none nectaring in other places.
