Signs of Fall

Date: 10/04/2002

Number: 1

The seventh graders and I were just out (2:00) doing some cloud charts and were especially watching a few cumulus clouds billowing upwards in the thermals that had developed. We realized we were also seeing several chimneys of hawks, kites, and even some turkey vultures ... we didn't have binoculars but could see two chimneys to the NNE, one overhead, and two to the SSW. We watched one kite ride the thermal upwards for five minutes before it tucked its wings in and sped off to the SSW.
The watchers at the Corpus Christi Hawkwatch, about seventy miles SSW of us, counted over a hundred thousand one day recently.
