Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/24/2002

Number: 1

Three monarchs were spotted on top of the Kittatinny Ridge at a place called Waggoner's Gap. Birders from all over go there to watch the raptor migration in the fall. I was attending a raptor migration workshop for educators and we went there to see what we could that day. In addition to the various hawks, golden eagles, bald eagle, vultures, and a flock of tundra swans, I also spotted the three monarchs. I didn't see them flying as high as the raptors and swans, of course, but they were still up pretty high. Migrating birds follow the ridge on their way south. Apparently, so do monarchs.
