Our fourth graders planted the Red Emperor Tulip bulbs on Friday, Nov 1, 2002. The temperature was 60 degrees. It was partly cloudy but the sun was shining during the planting. Our soil is red Virginia clay and was moist after considerable rainfall over the past 2 weeks. We expect our first hard freeze of the season tomorrow. Circumstances in our metropolitan area prevented us from planting prior to today. Children were not permitted to go outdoors. The bulbs were planted in the front of our school which faces southwest and receives full sun. They are buried seven inches below the surface and without any enhancers.
