Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 11/07/2002

Number: 1

Coastal Bend of Texas: Monarchs in good numbers this week on the peninsula, north end of the Lavaca Bay Causeway. Tuesday netted 62 for tag and release, released Wednesday. Renetted one of these, a large male, tonight coupled with a larger female. Netted 22 tonight out of loose clusters up and down the beach side of the peninsula, three coupled pairs. Our daughter went across the causeway at 8:20 this morning and counted 75 flying near the end of the peninsula out about a mile over the causeway. The causeway runs NNE to SSW and always has good numbers this time of the year. Some migrate across the bay but many seem to remain to overwinter in this general area with nectar sources, water, and shelter. Last year on the rare sunny days, we were still netting in the fifties into December.
