Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/02/2003

Number: 1

We drove over to Port O'Connor from Port Lavaca and, as on January 3rd, continued to find monarchs alive and doing well. Most were intent on nectaring on "ham and eggs" lantana bushes that can be found on some of the vacant lots. We did not stay long but did see at least four different individuals at one location. We did not net any to inspect up close, but thru binoculars all appeared to be males and at least moderately faded. The lantana showed evidence that at least one of the two light freezes nipped it. The native milkweed, Asclepias oenotheroides, that we found in the area of POC on January 3rd was no longer visible today.
