Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 01/20/2003

Number: 1

Not a big sighting, but they are here. We heard (peektut), then saw two robins. They were flitting from branch to branch and tree to tree. I couldn't tell what they were after, but I guessed they had been living on birdseed from backyard feeders. I wasn't TOO surprising to see them; we'd had some the last few winters which have also been warm. This year, we've only had a couple nights below zero (-1 and -2 degrees F), and most of the time we've had 20's to upper 30's. Our first snow was 12/13/02 and we have less than a foot on the ground. This is just one example of how warm winters affect animals and plants in the north. Probably the most serious impact has been on freshwater fish which are swimming in warmer ice-free water sooner and longer during the summer.
