Actually, this is not a first sighting, but there is not a category for overwintering western hummers, in the eastern part of the U.S. Your report on hummers, prompted me to send this report in. I have had a immature rufous hummer all winter here in Houston. It comes to the feeder regularly and roosts in my yard. It has been here since December 1st 2002, and is a hardy little bird, though the goldfinches sometimes bothers it since its feeder is near the finch feeder. A colorful but seemingly shy bird, not at all like the reports of rufous in their summer territories in the upper western states. This is my second winter for a rufous. Last year the bird arrived on Dec 1st and remained until mid March.
