Walden Pond Iceout contest. Our fifth graders did their lesson on range, median, mode, and mean with the data from Thoreau's time, the data from the 1990's-2002, and our own guesses for 2003.
Thoreau's Average = March 31
1990's - 2002 Average = March 10
Our guess for 2003= March 16
Reasons were discussed as to why iceout is earlier now than in Thoreau's time. Pollution (chemicals in the water changing its temperature, etc.) was a possibility, along with weather patterns, snow cover, and global warming.
