Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/16/2003

Number: 1

Down the road from our wildlife habitat is a wholesale nursery that propagates Asclepias tuberosa. (Butterfly weed)The nursery owner reported that he has had monarch larva on this milkweed species since January. I checked it out and they are monarch larva. He stated that he had the same occurrence last season, 2002. This nursery is next to a thick grove of healthy Eucalyptus globulus. Trees range in age from mature to saplings. Fronting the grove are several E. cladocalyx, which are currently in bloom and attractive to monarch butterflies as an abundant nectar source. Monarch's are currently taking nectar from Lantana montevidensis, L. 'Radiation, various species of Grevillea, and Callistemon citrinus, Lemon bottlebrush.
