Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/15/2003

Number: 1

Saw three monarchs - one male, one female, the other one could not be identified - too far away. the female was definitely tattered along the wing edges and color was faded. she was observed in the courtyard flying about and hitting into the brick wall many times. she occasionally landed on some annuals. she did not appear to be strong. after awhile, i walked around the corner. there i saw three monarchs and assumed one was the female i had seen moments earlier. the male and a female danced beautifully
and i watched for several minutes. the other butterfly would occasionally approach them; mostly it rested in the flower beds. It was a warm sunny day, around 12:30-1:00. that day the temp went to about 69 degrees. It had been cool the day before and was rainy the next day.
