Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/23/2003

Number: 1

The immense majority of Canadian robins nest in the boreal forests, including tundra regions at the very edge of the tree line. Barry has seen them in Laborador and at Churchill (Manitoba near Hudsons Bay).
- Southern Ontario is within the northern part of the robin's wintering range. In the fall, robins move to the southern U.S., with some moving to the Bahamas or Central America.
- The number of robins wintering in Ontario is only a fraction of the summer population. They tend to cluster in sheltered ravines or woodlots where they may go unnoticed by most folk.
- With lengthening daylight, hormonal changs are triggered. Males start migrating first, to stake out territories. they proclaim their territories with loud carolling songs that begin before dawn.
- Robins in Georgia or Alabama are beginning to move toward Ontario.(Forwarded by Don Davis)
